OTHER BOOKS
Kristin Gilpatrick is the author of other books about World War II:

Army Air Corps Staff Sergeant Alf Larson (pictured at
right on the bike he used to ride around the Philippines
before the war) was one of 7,500 American servicemen
whose courageous and tortured footprints will forever
mark the bloody pages of World War II history as
participants in the infamous week-long forced hike that
became known as The Bataan Death March.

Many of these tattered walkers took their final, brutal steps along that march as they fell prey to the hot sun, unquenchable thirst and hunger, jungle fevers and Japanese bayonets and rifles. For March survivors like Larson, "the hike" was merely the first of many steps through the gates of hellthe beginning of a nearly four-year battle to survive the Japanese captivity that followed it.

In these pages, war history author Kristin Gilpatrick and Larson friend and researcher Rick Peterson tell the story of one prisoner of war's incredible and inspiring triumph over captivity, disease, torture, boredom and the demons of his own mindthe story of one man's Footprints in Courage. "We were hot, thirsty, sick and exhausted to the point you couldn't talk, couldn't see, didn't care.

After a while everything just went blank in my mind; we were hardly conscious.

For six days I just put one foot in front of the other over and over and over again."
